The Benefits of Inoculating Your Compost (and How to Do It)

This weekend we were down at one of our favourite green spaces—Albion Community Garden—where we’ve helped set up Brighton’s first complete community compost station. It’s a beautiful, living system: a place where food waste, garden waste, and community care meet.

After a solid shovel session clearing a carpet of fallen Elm leaves from around the compost hub, we noticed they were piling up fast—dry, stubborn, and slow to break down. We wanted to give nature a little helping hand. That’s where some past-their-best kegs of nettle beer and kefir came in.

Thanks to a fortuitous cellar clear-out by our friends at Old Tree Brewery, we had just the thing to inoculate the compost and kickstart those microbial engines.

 


Why Inoculate Your Compost?

Inoculating compost is simply about adding microbial-rich materials to help speed up decomposition and increase the biodiversity of your compost pile. Think of it like adding a probiotic boost—not for your gut this time, but for your soil.

Here’s what inoculation can do for your compost:

  • Speed up breakdown, especially for tough, carbon-heavy materials like dry leaves.

  • Increase microbial diversity, which helps create richer, more fertile compost.

  • Improve nutrient availability, so your plants get more from your soil.

  • Balance moisture and pH, especially if you’re working with very dry or woody materials.

The best part? It’s a low-tech, low-waste practice rooted in circular thinking. What was once waste—like sour beer or surplus kefir—becomes nourishment for the garden.

 


Top Tips for Inoculating Your Compost

If you're keen to give your compost a boost, here are some tried-and-tested ways to inoculate it:

1. Use Fermented Drinks & Cultures

Past-their-best kombucha, kefir, nettle beer, or even the dregs of wine or vinegar all contain a living culture of yeasts, bacteria (like lactobacillus), and acids that help break down tough organic matter.

🧪 Pro tip: Mix them with water first and pour over dry layers like leaves or cardboard.

2. Add Finished Compost or Leaf Mould

Already broken-down compost or mature leaf mould is teeming with beneficial microbes. Sprinkling some on top of new layers works like a sourdough starter.

3. Blend in Garden Teas or Nettles

A bucket of compost tea, nettle tea, or comfrey brew makes a brilliant liquid inoculant. Just pour it into your pile to moisten and energize.

4. Don’t Forget the Browns

Inoculants help, but balance is key. Keep layering nitrogen-rich ‘greens’ (like food waste, coffee grounds) with carbon-rich ‘browns’ (leaves, cardboard). That balance keeps microbes happy.

5. Cover and Turn

Moisture, warmth, and oxygen are all essential. Covering the compost helps regulate moisture, and turning it keeps oxygen flowing—especially after adding liquids.

What’s beautiful about this cycle is how it connects us. Old Tree’s brewery waste nourishes Albion’s garden beds, which grow herbs and veg that nourish our community—and maybe even get brewed again.
